When I opened my inbox to find a submission from Pussy Riot — let’s just say I was pretty fucking stoked.
As a student of geopolitics, Pussy Riot had been on my radar for years.
However, if you’re not familiar with Pussy Riot, at least know this — they’re a collection of feminist post-punk protest rockers out of Moscow, Russia. And, they’re not scared of shit.
Here is what Nadya Tolokonnikova (member of Pussy Riot) had to say about their latest protest track, “Police State”:
“Pro-authoritarian trends and autocratic, conservative, right-wing leaders are spreading around the world like a sexually transmitted disease…
If we find a way…to act together, be articulate, focused and persuasive. We can [move] mountains…
If you have to point at an enemy, our greatest enemy is apathy. We’d be able to achieve fantastic results if we were not trapped by the idea that nothing can be changed.
What we’re lacking is confidence that institutions can actually work better, and that we can make them work better.
Actions are more important than opinions… It’s crucial to build alternative institutions and establish alternative power structures, especially when your government sucks. There’s a lot that can be done and should be done. Putin will not disappear tomorrow, but we can show our fellow Russians how corrupt…and ineffective [he] is.” — Nadya Tolokonnikova, Pussy Riot
Since Pussy Riot members have gotten out of prison, they’ve started an independent media outlet dubbed Mediazona — in an attempt to shine light on corrupt Russian courtrooms, police stations, prisons and labor camps.
Strong women standing up to a tyrannical government is a thing of beauty. Stay safe girls. This fucked up world needs you.
BREAKING NEWS: Pussy Riot will be touring the USA in March! Cities include Chicago, Portland, Seattle, and LA. Check the full itinerary here.
Keep up with the girls on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram. Listen to their latest tracks on Spotify!
