Sunday Cover: (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by Hollow Twin

Hollow Twin is an intensely dark folk-rock band based out of Vancouver, BC. The group is fronted by Emmalee Watts and Becky Wosk who discovered common ground between their love for classic rock and other things now dead.

Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” has always been a track I turn to in my darkest of hours — it’s haunting lyrics always seem to ooze their way into the annals of my mind in the strangest of times.

Overcoming the fear of death is a feat that few have truly mastered, but as I age and become more self-aware of the bizarre nature of this reality — the idea of death has become more about the adventure into the great unknown, and less about the finality of darkness, or the abyss. Besides, we’re already dead.

The Hollow Twin’s poignant cover track was produced by Ryan Worsely at Echoplant Studios, BC.

YouTube Exclusive Ft. Lew Phillips | Waldeck | Hotel Life

Lew Phillips – “Shake Baby Shake”

Lew Phillips — a classic rock and roller from Canada — is a masterful conglomeration of American and British Rock and Pop music from the ‘50s and ‘60s.

“Shake Baby Shake” is a radical track off Phillips’ recently released, Shake Music — a nostalgic album infused with rambunctious rockabilly undertones and vibrations from an era now dead and gone.

The up and coming Phillips’ uptempo music makes people want to shake their hips, dance, hoop, holler, and have a grand old time.

And now, without further ado — here is THE Lew Phillips!

Waldeck – “Never Let You Go”

Klaus Waldeck is a Viennese electronica musician. He is widely known for his acclaimed album, Ballroom Stories — an influential prototype of the Electro Swing movement.

“Never Let You Go” off Waldeck’s “Atlantic Ballroom” album, is a jazzy remembrance of a time now obsolete. On the track, Waldeck orchestrates a new and fresh landscape of electronic ballroom brilliance.

As a listener, I hear the immense amount of energy that went into bringing “Atlantic Ballroom” to life — it’s a work of opulent artistry. A transcendental piece of Electro Swing.

Deep within the sonic substructure of “Never Let You Go” there is a sense of upbeat optimism that reminds me of something I haven’t yet experienced. It’s a feeling that I fear will never let me go.

Hotel Life – “There Will Be a Tomorrow”

St. Petersburg, Florida outfit — Hotel Life — is an indie band that fucking kills. Their gorgeous single “There Will Be a Tomorrow” is about a breakup and the reassuring light at the end of a long, dark, and dreadfully dreary tunnel.

The track is a mellowed-out, yet experimental 60’s jangle depicting the inevitable good that will eventually come out of a severed relationship.

As Billy from Stranger Things said: “There’s plenty of bitches in the sea”.

The band is comprised of Captain Joe Harley and backed by another stellar band, Luxury Mane.

The single was recorded at The Ward in St. Petersburg, Florida — in the heat of the Summer of 2018. Enjoy.

0013: Digitalia Records – Shampoo Banana Single (2018)

Photograph Courtesy of Digitalia Records

Digitalia records — a project conceptualized by Eureka Brown — is a pseudo-monotheistic trio out of Illinois, consisting also of Elmo Townsend and percussion extraordinaire, Beat Sinclair.

We reviewed Digitalia’s “We’re All Gonna Die” back in April. You can check out that write-up, here.

Shampoo Banana is a relaxed work of vintage pop art that seems to be falling through a window of an iridescent soundscape and into an avante garde illusion of a nostalgic postmodern noir.

The track is infested with tropical undertones that seem to take form as the rhythmic instrumentation bounces between a corridor of world music. Simply put, the track is magnificent and to top it off, concludes with a dark nursery rhyme fit for a place not of this world.

Right when you think you have an artist figured out, they put out a track like “Brimstone” — a song brimming with hyper-burlesque caricatures of a russian drama lost in a fractal frenzy of perfection. In short, it’s a brisk jam shimmering with experimental brilliance.

Shampoo Banana Single can now be streamed or downloaded everywhere music is digitally available. Check out Digitalia’s previous releases on Discogs.

The Single will also be released on CD and cassette in the coming days — so be on the lookout!
