Cousin Kula

Cousin Kula (a Bristol project) born through a shared affinity for psychoactive compounds and a mutual love for jazz music, take a small step into a more mellow yet hypnotic direction with their new track.

‘McLovin’ You’ is the followup single from Cousin Kula’s forthcoming self-produced EP, The Casa Kula Cassette.

The catatonic track is a psychedelic slow dance through a blurry soundscape littered with experimental jazz undertones and a soulful beat that may remind one of an age now dead and gone. It’s a sonic spectacle to gaze upon and cherish for but a little while. Indeed, it’s the kind of track that you put on repeat, and listen to over and over again, until your flatmate screams at you.

Now, sit back, turn up the volume, and listen to the groovy vibrations of Cousin Kula.

As one walks into the Cousin Kula compound, one is met by bicycles in the hallway, local artwork hung on the walls and instruments strewn about… In the garden a handmade pizza oven and home grown vegetables exhibit their selfless ambition for self-sufficiency.

“‘McLovin You’ kind of signifies a shift towards writing more soul influenced tunes. Just enjoying the simplicity of songs as they present themselves, not fucking with them too much, and not trying to smear lyrics with too much weirdness, it felt okay and actually liberating to just write lyrics that just lay naked and obvious. ‘I’ll never forget loving you’. The tune serves as a farewell to the biggest love of my life, but not a goodbye forever thing, just like a – I’ll always love you kinda thing.”

The Limelight: KALI | Jessica Lea Mayfield

KALI – Back To The Start

The talented and perhaps borderline brilliant 16-year-old artist who goes by the name of KALI (full name Kali Flanagan) shares with us her debut single and music video entitled “Back To The Start”.

The track is a blurry slow-burner set in the city streets of the metropolis. It’s the kind of track that gets better with every listen. Like a fine wine. Indeed, a true nostalgic throwback to a thing lost not so long ago. A thing you just can’t quite remember, but a thing you know that is fresh, innovative, and oh so natural in every metaphysical sense.

“Back To The Start” is the perfect introduction to KALI – an artist who we expect much more creative output from in the very near future. And we can’t wait!

Her Incredibly lush and introspective soundscape on this particular track captures the enticing visual co-directed by KALI, Zealand Yancy and Sophia Ziskin. A visual that fully encapsulates the fresh and tender rush of being a teenager in the city with your friends.

Jessica Lea Mayfield – Daddy Boyfriend

Jessica Lea Mayfield’s next album will be made up of a series of two song increments on 7 inch multi color vinyls. The artist also shares with us the animated video for “Daddy Boyfriend” created by New York City artist, Abby Jame.

The track is a grungy, yet soft teeshirt that’s quite worn and a bit faded, but fits you just perfectly. That’s exactly how we feel about Jessica Lea Mayfield’s track “Daddy Boyfriend”.

In all honesty, the track was a bit perplexing at first, but the more we thought about it, the more we realized that in a very direct sense little girls do indeed idolize their daddies. Especially the ones who pamper them by taking them to the zoo, buying them ice cream cones, and taking them to the cinema. Indeed, these are all things that a person would do for their significant other. And what did mother always say? Oh yes: “Honey, you’ll prbably end up with somebody like your father.”

I digress, so in the meantime, keep up with JLM on Instagram and give her a follow on Spotify you filthy animals.

Baby FuzZ

Passionfruit smoothie tycoon – Baby FuzZ – released the indescribable work of art “Acid Night” on October 23rd, in the infamous year of 2020.

When we thought things could not get any more bizarre, Baby FuzZ serves us up a cosmic slow-jam from the dark depths of a cotton candy stand in far right field. A real slow-burner shimmering with radical experimental elements of power-pop and psychedelia.

Words could never really describe what you are about to watch. So we simply suggest you sit back, light one up, and hit play. You will not regret it for a second.

“Acid Night” is a song I wrote about feeling a sense of impending doom and the idea that things have gotten really weird. I wrote it while on an acid trip at a baseball game last summer. I guess it’s like a dark vision of America that I had at the time. It just felt like something awful was about to happen and people were unaware of it. I guess it’s timely now in 2020.

Dreams on Tape

Dreams on Tape is an experimental project based out of Tampa, Florida.

The project was formed just this year and is the moniker of Jake Benfant, who writes and records everything in the solitude of his apartment recording studio.

Dreams on Tape influences include coming of age films, music documentaries, vintage photographs, modern bedroom and dream pop artists, and of course, the slippery underworld of psychedelia. The result is a fresh soundscape with nostalgic roots emanating from a a mysterious source few have uncovered. And now, here is Dreams on Tape’s first single fresh off their upcoming debut EP, Nostalgia.

Dream on Tape’s track “Wide Awake” is an evocative lo-fi slow dance into the cosmic bosom of everything that is delicious and radical. The vocals flow so effortlessly with the texture of the soundscape, one must make sure they’re awake, and not dreaming.

If you’re into VHS, tube socks, and white hightop sneakers, then we think you’ll enjoy this track just as much as we did. And perhaps even more.

The track was released on all major outlets on October 30th. Be sure to give Dreams on Tape a follow on Instagram, and give the project a follow on Spotify you filthy animals.

José Lobo

José Lobo was born in Venezuela, raised in Brazil, but is currently residing in the great northern land of Canada. José Lobo has performed on the streets and many hollow stages across Europe, North Africa, and the Americas.

Influenced by the folklore of the Venezuelan tonada and the rhythms of bossa nova, José Lobo continues to explore his identity to this day as an authentic Americana artist through his eclectic songwriting and talents as a producer.

“Poder Decir Adiós” is a romantic Latin American slow jam fit for the glorious depths of purgatory. The dreamy song is about how the quarantine made José Lobo feel during the month of august and how he naively yearned for the coming of autumn.

José Lobo wrote “Poder Decir Adiós” towards the end of august and recorded it a week later. It was in large part inspired by the bands he listened to when he was a teenager growing up in Brazil.

The heart-wrenching track was recorded at Fraser McClean’s home studio (who is also on lead guitar, bass, drums, and keys). The single was produced by José Lobo and mixed by Andres Puche.
