Aaron Taos – Loneliness

“Loneliness” is a sorrowful track of optimistic hope Aaron Taos wrote as he was crossing the great divide of distraught — the existential valley of mental solitude.

The tragic tune is a fatal waltz into the lethal clutch of darkness — a sort of shallow noxious breath upon an arid plane dazzling with emerald hues of a luminous gassy glow.

“Loneliness” drips with the beautiful emotion of a solemn sadness wreaking of a sort of narcissistic sorrow.

In the midst of a self-induced depression — what seemed to help Taos cope with the psychological pain was remembering that conventional success isn’t everything.

Relationships, specifically that of his girlfriend at the time — was a shining light through a dark period — and reminded him that as important as goals seem to be, authentic connections and genuine love is the foundation of feeling okay.

Taos directed the video with his good friend, Mike Curry.

The presence of a fleeting loneliness is felt throughout the video, and is quite apparent with Taos sitting all alone playing his guitar in the forest, and later being beaten by his dual sides of personality — the light and the darkness.

Taos produced the song, and it was masterfully mixed by Andrew Sarlo.

Soundcloud Exclusive: God of Love | Tru3Rivr | Festive Boat | Tjuv | Grow Native Plants!

God Of Love

Lo-fi indie outfit God of Love is made up of Cole and Chase Burnett — two psychedelic brothers from the great state of Texas.

Their latest track “Gabriel” is a nostalgic echo from the past shadows of a fading life. A reflection on the inner workings of the wandering mind — attempting to make its way through the blur of reality’s madness.

The poignant vocals of God of Love floats above a truly magnificent soundscape — sparkling with accents of lucid stardust and cosmic craftsmanship.

The sonic spectacle of this indie outfit is a trip to behold. We hope to hear more from God of Love very soon.

Tru3Rivr

“Forgotten “Time” is a new track from the upcoming debut album of Tru3rivr entitled, Late in the Day.

The intricate soundscape shines through warm fuzzy vocals of self-inflicted solitude and the eternal quest for the most ancient of all truisms.

The track maintains a relaxed feeling throughout with silky melodies over a primitive beat — and a piano solo that evolves into a long meandering journey of self-reflection and the quest for inner peace.

Take the trip and travel to a place now long forgotten. A place in possession of the truth — the hidden chamber of the eternal secret.

Festive Boat

Festive Boat is the experimental DIY indie-pop bedroom project of Nicole Roman-Johnston.

After having served as the sole female member of several indie bands, Nicole has finally set sail toward finding her very own sound using her laptop, wifi, and the lonely instruments strewn about the floor of her bedroom studio.

The sound of Festive Boat muddies the warm waters of analog and digital, lo-fi and complex, lighthearted and inquisitive. A heartfelt indie-pop ballad driven by a winsome guitar, a chorus of lovely juvenile vocals, a vintage drum machine, and experimental measures one can only achieve in the solace and comfort of the bedroom studio.

New Festive Boat projects are on the Horizon — so stay tuned!

Tjuv

Formed back in 2012, Österlen-based Tjuv is a fusion of 70s and 90s indie with a bit of 80s electro influence.

Old friends who connected again by chance — songwriters Martin Svensson and Peter Anthonsson eventually joined up with drummer Anders Persson and keyboardist Anders Thoren from Wildie and then went on to recruit Martin Tell for his signature subterranean basslines…

Utilizing a fair amount of vocal harmonies and rambling, dreamlike melodies deriving as much from Americana as from their Swedish roots — Tjuv is now a more complex and complete organism — larger than any one part of its separate entities.

Tjuv´s debut album was recorded and mixed at the old school studio in Äsperöd and in Seved, Malmö by Tjuv and Wildie member, Rasmus Svensson.

Grow Native Plants!

Grow Native Plants! is an experimental indie outfit from planet earth who wants you to support your local habitats and creatures of the forest by exclusively growing native flowers and other plants.

Their track “Catchin Air (Blue Moon Sea-shine)” is a rhythmic meditation on a fragile thing lost long ago.

Exotic plants — if planted in the wild — wreak havoc on the native environment and oftentimes eradicate sensitive ecosystems. The same goes for many exotic animals released into the wild.

Think before you plant or release any type of exotic organism.

How To Release & Promote Your Music In The Digital Age

Here is a checklist I go through upon each and every album we release here on Santa Rosa Records. I hope this may be of help to some of you indie artists out there — wherever you are.

Distrokid is a great distribution service, as is The Orchard. Honestly, it really all depends on you, and what you want from your distribution service. Or, perhaps get signed to an indie label so that you can focus more of your time and energy on what matters most — your music!

  • Once you’ve submitted your album to the plethora of digital platforms via a distribution service or indie label, the work begins!

  • Submit to Spotify and Filtr playlists. We’ve not had a lot of success getting added to Spotify’s curated playlists, but have had a ton of success getting added to personal playlists, from fans to bloggers. Reach out, you may be surprised.
  • Submit album for release on Soundcloud, Bandcamp, YouTube, and Discogs.

  • Plan live release show — or perhaps go live on YouTube or Instagram on the day of release. Just do something. A social media post at the very least.

  • The days following the release — periodically send indie music blogs and radio stations your favorite couple tracks off the album. Personally, I wouldn’t try to email more than 25 at a time — your chances of getting flagged greatly increase if you try and mass email many more than this. Also, remember to utilize the BBC for mass mailing blogs and radio. Keep it classy my friends.

  • SubmitHub is a pretty nifty music blog submission service — we’ve been pretty happy with the platform so far. They make the whole music blog submission process pretty easy — although not always painless.

  • Post about album on your website (if you have one) and all of your social media platforms — for weeks. No, make that months — or until your next release.

  • Releasing your album physically can also stimulate sales and help solidify reputation. People crave the nostalgia of cassette tapes and vinyl records. In fact, both mediums have been increasing in popularity in recent years. You can’t go wrong with either IMHO. However, I’d steer clear of CDs for the time being. They seem to have really stagnated among listeners as of late.

  • Promoting your music on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Spotify is never a bad idea. You just need to have the cash. We usually spend around $25-$50 per release on promoted posts, and have driven some decent traffic as a result. But again, the quality of the post and your targeted audience is very important. Spend wisely.

  • Post your favorite tracks to applicable subreddits. The Reddit community is very active and growing at a rapid pace. They’re THE forum of the internet. Remember to format your posts correctly. Note that highly upvoted and posts with lots of comments really help drive listeners to your tracks’ YouTube, Soundcloud or Spotify.
  • A music video for a particular track, or set of tracks is also never a bad idea. Release it on YouTube — and wherever else you’re able to reach viewers. YouTube is a whole nother animal of untapped potential. I predict we have only seen the tip of this megalithic iceberg of visuals.

Closing thoughts

Collaborating with other artists is the name of the game. Not only will they add something to your project, but come release day, they will help you promote because they have skin in the game. And don’t just collaborate with one artist on an album. Collaborate with three, four, five, or more. I’ve learned this the hard way unfortunately. But it’s never too late to learn.

Note: I will update this post regularly as new technologies and modes of music promotion emerge. Let us know in the comments below if you have any other ideas!

YouTube Exclusive: MaidaVale | S3LF | FUR | Los Shadows

MaidaVale

MaidaVale is a female fueled indie post-rock band out of Stockholm, Sweden.

Their latest rugged grunge-diamond, “Gold Mind” — performed at Tapetown studios in Aarhus, in October of 2018 — is an underground gem reminiscent of an iridescent scene lost in the shadows of a never-ending psychedelic carnival gone beautifully awry.

The arid track is taken from MaidaVale’s second album — Madness Is Too Pure — which was released in 2018 on the reputable, The Sign Records.

The album was produced by the creative mastermind — Jari Haapalainen.

S3LF

S3lf — an outside of the box artist out of California — is a product of the headnod era.

“The heart of the music is created from a standpoint of observation written about a man finding his way in life. Let a brotha breathe.” — S3lf

In our lowly opinion — S3lf & PLCMNT make for a fabulously explosive collaborative force on the artistically inclined track, “High”. It’s a match made in the celestial heavens of the cosmos — a beautiful addition to the alternative world of conscious lo-fi hip-hop.

FUR

“FUR” is the glorious debut EP of Brighton-based quartet FUR.

The EP is a collection of tender — nostalgia-inducing yet disgustingly fresh sounding songs from an outfit truly coming into their own.

Formed just over three years ago after frontman Murray met guitarist Harry in an online forum during their university years — the duo instantly began writing songs upon meeting, and the rest is history. “I was very aware that going to a place like Brighton would definitely allow you to do the band thing,” explains the singer. “So when me and Harry met each other we thought, let’s get it started as soon as possible so we’re not wasting time.”

With bassist Tav and drummer Flynn soon finishing out the line up — waste time they did not. Last fall’s “If You Know That I’m Lonley” is a solid testament to that. With only a camera and a £100 budget, the group headed to the rural woods of New Forest to shoot the music video for the aforementioned single.

After the shoot, and over 3.6 millions YouTube hits later, the band has landed slots with the likes of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Miles Kane, and Matt Maltese. Stay tuned.

Los Shadows

Los Shadows embrace their cross border roots on “Laugh Now Cry Later” — a gritty, Chicano flavored track encompassing the entanglements of love and the ambiguity of being naive and perpetually vulnerable whilst in the midst of a state of total blissful ignorance.

The Real Los Shadows of Nasty City, USA — feel the cosmic connection on their delightful new track “Laugh Now Cry Later” and dish out an experimental explosion radiating with faded hints of moon dust and after dinner cocktails. A delightful track to lose oneself in.

Indulge with an ease of moderation my friend.

YouTube Exclusive: Eyes Eyes | No Hay Dolor | Sissysocks | Paul Nelson

EYES EYES – “WAR”

Swedish/American outfit Eyes Eyes’ new indie-pop anthem “War” is an infectious track now set to film in an eerily familiar manner — depicting the lost innocence of a man floundering in the weighty depths of darkness and angst.

Actor Jonatan Blode, and Director Daniel Lundh choreograph an emotionally gripping work of art that seems to bleed the consumer at every turn. The short film was masterfully shot by Olle Lundin, and is now available via Vimeo and YouTube.

Johan Barrett is on the vocals, Markus Miljand on the guitar and keyboards, Lars Skoglund on the Drums, and Daniel Bengtson is on the bass. The chorus seems to pluck the very strings which rule the heart.

Eyes Eyes new album is set to be released sometime in January I believe — so be on the lookout my friends!

NO HAY DOLOR – “LA VERDAD”

No Hay Dolor is a beautifully fragmented trio out of Madrid — digging up lo-fi diamonds of particularly stunning clarity and texture.

They’re truly masters of their craft — and their latest experimental track “La Verdad” lays down the truth, as it slowly burns itself into a manic state of pure oblivion.

The driving drums and wailing guitars of “La Verdad” seems to harp back to a time of simpler beauties and more blissful thoughts of ignorance — a time lost in the vapor of its own reflection.

Like the legendary fable of the transcendental choir of harmonic demigods singing their glorious songs of holiness to their empress — the vocals of a mere mortal man shine through the eclectic soundscape and bestows his godlike glory upon the listener in the most radical of manners.

SISSYSOCKS – “I’LL DIE ONE DAY”

Sissysock’s latest track takes an inevitable sonic trip through the mind’s eye to remind itself of the ravenous yearning of the great abyss — a sort of murmuring whimper in the dead of night.

The soundscape shimmers with undertones of ancient atmospheric origins, and seems to whisper of a desperate heart trying to find its way back home.

“I’ll Die One Day” is a track off of Sissysock’s upcoming album, Slink Away.

As one contemplates the bizarre dualities of our flickering existence — silence shrouds the listener, and beckons him to rest his weary head for but one more night.

PAUL NELSON – “DO OR DIE”

Nashville outcast Paul Nelson delivers to us an ode of what must be done. His latest track “Do or Die” is a down-home dalliance — wreaking of an honest inflection of beauty and grit.

The jam weeps and wails its way to a happier place — a temporary refuge of hiding one can only hope to stay for but a little while longer.

The two track album was recorded at The Bomb Shelter — and was entirely written by the infamous, Paul Nelson.

His 7” vinyl album is now available on his Bandcamp! Get it while it’s hot my friends. And as always, stay cool.
